The tendering environment in construction Jul to Nov 2008

ADCAS, the Association of Ductwork Contractors and Allied Specialists, asked Hitherwood Consulting and Hemdean Consulting to investigate the tendering environment for specialist contractors. Hitherwood and Hemdean conducted a desk study and telephone survey to find out whether guidance had already been produced in this area. A second phase of this work started in January 2009 to raise awareness of the issues amongst the wider construction industry.

Setting the scene for inward investment into the East Midlands construction sector Apr to Nov 2008

East Midlands Development Agency, emda, wanted to gather underpinning evidence to support its inward investment priorities for the construction sector in the region. BSRIA led this project, with Oxford Intelligence as project partners, and Hitherwood Consulting as specialist research contractor. The result was an extensive report on the potential of the regional construction sector to attract inward investment, an analysis of the research and academic strengths of the region and a database of existing construction firms operating in the East Midlands.

BSRIA's Whole-Life Costing Guide Dec 2007 to Apr 2008

Building on its experience delivering training in whole-life costing analysis, Hitherwood was delighted to be asked to write an introductory guide to whole-life costing for clients, contractors and design consultants. This guide is now available from the BSRIA bookshop.

Training in Whole Life Costing Analysis Feb 2007 to May 2008

Whole life costing is now required on more and more projects as clients, designers, contractors and suppliers wake up to the power of "whole life decision making". Hitherwood Consulting delivers two separate training courses focused on the principles behind whole life costing and on the practicalities of actually calculating whole life costs. These courses are arranged through BSRIA, and bookings should be made through the BSRIA web site.

The next courses are scheduled for November 2008.

Safespur Forum members' meetings Jul, Oct, Dec 2007 & Apr 2008

Safespur is a network for contractors and consultants working on nuclear-licensed sites in the UK. The network holds meetings for its members four times each year. Hitherwood Consulting has organised the last 4 meetings for the Forum, on a variety of topics. These have been:

  • Communicating safety cases to stakeholders
  • Comments on the revision of SAFEGROUNDS guidance
  • Consultation on the review of the Exemption Orders
  • Site work plans and opportunities

Hitherwood's association with SAFESPUR continues with the organisation of the next meeting in July 2008.

Engineers' duties under CDM2007 Jan & Feb 2008

The revised CDM Regulations that came into force in April 2007 altered the duties of designers. Hitherwood facilitated a series of workshops and discussions amongst the engineering design staff of ACDP, a medium-sized building services consultancy. The outcome was a deeper understanding amongst the staff and some suggestions for changes to in-house processes to strengthen CDM compliance within ACDP.

Review of Foresight Reports for the Considerate Constructors Scheme Apr and May 2007

Hitherwood Principal Consultant David Churcher analysed 15 previously published foresight reports to build a picture of the construction industry in 2020. David's analysis also identified key indicators for considerate sites in 2020, including an emphasis on site-based waste processing and engagement with local communities and neighbourhoods. This work was carried out as a sub-consultant to CIRIA who project managed the study on behalf of CCS.

Corporate Training in Whole Life Costing Jan & Jul 2007

Whole Life Costing training is also available for corporate groups. Two recent recipients of this training have been NHS Grampian, based in Aberdeen, and the City of London Corporation. In-house training gives your staff and project teams the chance to understand how whole life costing can work for your organisation, and is usually more cost-effective than sending groups of staff on externally organised training courses. The training is delivered as two training days, which can either be consecutive or arranged 1 to 2 weeks apart.
